Delete MS Word Files History

ParetoLogic Privacy Controls offers a secure method to delete MS Word file traces from your system.

As well as the file itself- it is also possible to clear out the Windows registry, application histories, and other areas of the Windows system that may contain references to the document.

As well as scanning your system according to the filter options you set ParetoLogic Privacy Controls can be used to find individual files on your computer and securely delete them using one of three levels of security.

Secure Deletion Of Personal Files

Secure deletion, or file shredding as it is commonly referred to, is an effective way of preventing anybody from snooping through your personal information. When we delete files or objects from our system it is rare for them to be completely removed. The registry tends to retain references to deleted files and remnants or even entire copies of files can be found by searching through the hard drive of a computer.

Preventing The Theft Of Personal Data

Regularly clearing out your system can prevent hackers from physically accessing your computer and ensure that spyware applications and viruses find it equally difficult to gain access to your personal information. Another reason for the regular spring clean of your drive is to prevent conflicts between files and applications and to ensure that your software, system, and PC run as smoothly and quickly as possible.

Overwriting Techniques

ParetoLogic Privacy Controls provides a means to scan your system to look for obsolete or unnecessary files and entries. It also provides the services of a secure file shredder that enables users to search for files and then choose to shred them using one, three, or seven overwrite passes. The number of times a file is overwritten determines how secure the deletion is – the greater the number of passes the more difficult the file is to restore even using specialist software.

1 – Open ParetoLogic Privacy Controls

Open ParetoLogic Privacy Controls and click on the Advanced Shred link in the top left of the main window to open the shredding page.

2 – The Shred Screen

On the Shred screen a list of files you select for deletion will be displayed.

To add more files to the deletion list click the Add button. When you first click the Add button you will be presented with two options.

3 – Add Files Individually

Add Files... lets you select files manually from anywhere on your system. Once you click on this option a folder browser window will open enabling you to navigate to the files you wish to delete. Double click these files or highlight them and select the Open button.

4 – Add Recycle Bin Contents

Add All Recycle Bin Files. This option enables you to select every file that is found within the recycle bins on your computer. Simply emptying the recycle bin will not have the desired effect and the file in question can normally be found fairly easily using specialist software.

5 – Shredding Options

Once you have made your selection ParetoLogic Privacy Controls will populate the shredding list according to your selections. Once you are happy with the files that are included in the list you should determine the level of shredding you want to use.

The basic method of deletion is a single overwrite pass. While this is more secure than emptying the recycle bin or deleting the file manually it is still comparatively lapse and should not be used for documents, files, or applications that contain highly personal information.

Three overwrite passes, also known as DOD, offers greater security and is still a fast way to securely delete files.

The most secure method of overwriting or deletion is to use seven overwrite passes. This method is the slowest but files deleted like this can not be recovered or read even using the most advanced specialist software.

6 – Start Shredding

Click the shred button and confirm your decision to overwrite these files so that ParetoLogic Privacy Controls can begin the shredding process.

7 – Viewing Status

While ParetoLogic Privacy Controls is shredding the files you have selected it will display a status screen. Once completed click Finish and you will be returned to the main ParetoLogic Privacy Controls shredding screen where you can continue to use the application or close it down.

Using this technique it is possible not only to remove Word and other Windows files but any files or applications found on your system. Simply add any files to the list and begin the erasing procedure.

Deleting Word Document History

Another method of using ParetoLogic Privacy Controls is to enable it to scan certain areas of your system. This procedure can be used to empty the Word document history in the following way.

1 – Opening ParetoLogic Privacy Controls

Open ParetoLogic Privacy Controls and click on the Options tab in the top left box of the main window.

2 – MS Office Option

Navigate down to the MS Office category. Ensure this is selected by clicking the check-box if necessary and then click the arrow next to the list to bring up the different MS Office applications that ParetoLogic Privacy Controls can scan.

3 – Choosing The Version Of Word You Want

Highlight the version of Word that you are using and click the Scan & Erase link in the top left of the window.

4 – Start Scanning

Click Start to start the scanning engine.

5 – The Scan Summary

Once the scan is complete you will be given a summary of the results and the option to delete these results.

6 – Scan Results

On completion you will be forwarded back to the main ParetoLogic Privacy Controls screen.

Choosing The Right Option

These two methods produce different results. For deleting files the first option is the one that will shred files in a secure way but to clear out the history of documents that is retained by Word you should use the last method.
