Your First Steps With ParetoLogic Spam Controls
ParetoLogic Spam Controls can be used to establish a virtually impenetrable wall against the irritation of spam email. Many users complain of receiving hundreds of emails each day from unauthorized and plain underhand marketers and while it may seem little more than an irritant it can be particularly damaging in certain circumstances. Small businesses can often struggle to cope with the influx of junk email putting undue and unfair pressure on IT infrastructure while even the individual user may find their email account becoming essentially useless. Too many junk emails and it becomes less and less likely that you will find all of the genuine emails they hide.
Why Check The Settings When You First Install
Spam Controls is an automated application runs in the background of your system while you work. When an email is delivered Spam Controls will scan it to determine whether it appears to contain spam content or whether it is a genuine email from a genuine user. As such, and because of the level of automation that the program relies on, it is essential that you closely monitor and ensure the viability of the settings. Getting used to the application is quick and simple, but it always pays to alter settings to match your requirements as soon as possible.

The Home
Page
Once you have installed the free trial edition of Spam Controls the home page, or main page, will appear as above. This gives you a direct link to the ParetoLogic website where you can purchase a user license in order to upgrade to the full version. The free trial version enables you to scan all incoming emails for a period of thirty days. However, if you wish to extend the scanning period or you want to be able to take action against the spam you receive then you will need to register by clicking the Register Now button.

Clicking the link will open your browser to the ParetoLogic website, as above, where you can securely order the appropriate license for your requirements.

The Options
Screen
On the Options screen you will be given statistics regarding the latest scan performed on your email as well as a brief run down of the results. A Scan Now button also lets you scan again to look for any emails in Outlook or Outlook Express that may be considered spam. At the bottom of the screen there are several options that you may wish to alter in order to personalize the scanning and quarantining of emails.
Enable/Disable Dialogs
When you receive an email that Spam Controls believes to be a spam email you have the choice of being presented with a dalog or enabling the application to take the most likely option. The first tick box “Display “Mark As Spam” and “Mark As Not Spam” Dialogs” allows you to enable or disable this option. Under this tick box there are two more options. “Automatically add sender to the appropriate list” will add the sender of junk or spam emails to the spam sender's list ensuring you do not receive any more of their messages in your inbox, while senders of emails believed to be good will be added to your allow list. This offers a good way of automating much of the process.

Enable/Disable Toolbar Dialog
The next option on the Options screen is “Display Toolbar Information dialog when launching email application”. The screen above is the Toolbar Information dialog and if you leave this option enabled you will be presented with this screen whenever you open your email application. Disabling this option means you will not receive the dialog any longer.
Purging SP Emails
Purging the PL Spam Controls folder means emptying the contents of quarantined or deleted emails. If you receive a lot of spam then this folder can fill up quickly but, on the other hand, if you do not regularly check the folder then you may find that important emails are mistakenly deleted. As such it is important to empty the folder out often enough that it does not become over filled with email but not so often that you are unable to check its contents. The final option lets you determine whether or not you receive a confirmation message when emails are being purged.
The Allow List

The Allow List page enables you to add known senders to a list of senders that will not be blocked when they email you. As well as the ability to manually add allowed senders to the list individually it is also possible, by clicking the Import Address Book, for Spam Controls to automatically import contacts from your Outlook and/or Outlook Express contact address books. Simple click the button and let ParetoLogic Spam Controls do the rest for you. Any addresses it finds will be populated to the list on the left.
The Block List

The Block List works in a similar way to the add list. Addresses can be added by entering the email into the first box and then clicking Add so they appear in the bottom list of the screen. Any addresses automatically added to your Block List while Spam Controls scans your emails is also found in this box. Entire domains can also be added to the list by simply adding the domain section of a bad domain and clicking add. Any emails received from any email address within this domain will then be blocked.
About Page

The final page is the About page. This is the page that enables users to check for updates and set update options in order that the software can automatically check for the latest updates whenever you choose. Your registration details, including the type of license, the license key, and the license expiry are also found on this page. Clicking the Get License Key is another method of navigating to the ParetoLogic license purchase page to buy the type of license you require.
On installation the software will have checked for updates automatically and will have also ran a quick scan of the emails currently found within your email applications. If you skipped either of these steps or they weren't carried out for another reason, then you can run them again from this page.
